Diets Don’t Work… What Now?

The Dieter’s Lament: Muscle Lost, Fat Gained, Confidence Shaken

“I’ve been dieting, and I’m frustrated,” a recent X-Force Body prospect told me. “I think I have put on more pounds after I lost a few.”

We’ll call her Cindy. She was considering cancelling the diet program she ordered on TV to join us here at X-Force Body. However, Cindy was – as the cliché goes – once bitten, twice shy. The TV ad promised results, too. But what it delivered was only temporary. So, why should she believe X-Force Body?

“I understand,” I told Cindy. “Would you like to know why your weight-loss roller coaster happens?” I asked her. And to my surprise, tears welled up in her eyes. This fat-loss, fat-gain emotional cycle was a chronic lifetime dilemma for Cindy. She needed someone to identify with her pain.

I told her that her initial “success” was a result of losing both fat and muscle. After her motivation wore off, and she reverted to old habits, the weight returned. Only this time it was all fat; she didn’t gain any muscle. She just gained more weight.

Then, I quoted her something I learned from Dr. Ellington Darden that I’ve probably said a thousand times: “Those programs that claim you can lose weight without doing a lick of exercise are lying to you.”

Cindy’s eyes cleared. There’s something liberating about the truth.

I didn’t sugarcoat it for Cindy. Yes, she had been deceived, but it was her responsibility to own it and move forward.

“We can help,” I told her, “but it won’t be easy. Nothing worthwhile ever is.”
